WHAT WILL BECOME OF US to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival!
The Stick Figure Studios documentary feature WHAT WILL BECOME OF US for which I am one of the producers, will premiere 02 May at the Tribeca Film Festival.
It is a deeply personal and moving film about these recent years in the life of the legendary holocaust survivor and founder of Westfield Shopping Centres, Sir Frank Lowy. Directed by Steven Cantor, it’s been my honour to work with him, Jamie and the Stick Figure gang again, over these past two and half years, not to mention getting to know Sir Frank himself.

Matt Ferro in “The Fundamentals of Animation” now in it’s 2nd printing
A year ago today, the “The Fundamentals of Animation” second edition was published.
I didn’t know until recently of this expanded second edition, so I’m marking its anniversary here.
I’m honored to be quoted and referenced, among such notables in the animation world as Peter Doctor (Pixar)
and Eileen Poon (ILM)!
“The Fundementals of Animation” is one of the most respected and complete overviews of the process of animation creation, both creative and technical. You can get your copy here: Booktopia

My Precsient Vision
A colleague reading my blog article below (SCIENTISTS STORE FILM CLIP IN DNA and PLAY IT BACK) reminded me that I actually referenced the same film clip in an article I wrote for international film magazine CINEMA WITHOUT BORDERS in 2007. I didn’t predict that we’d be storing it’s data in bacterial DNA, but I did have faith that soon film would be replaced completely by digital sensors and that there would be no movie left untouched by digital processes. Admittedly, not hard predictions to make!
The article IT’S ALL ABOUT TIME is a “deep read” but it outlines the different ways time is expressed and manipulated in what we still call “film”, no matter what capture or storage medium. Read it here.

SCIENTISTS STORE FILM CLIP IN DNA and PLAY IT BACK
In my short documentary THE SCIENTIST TRYING TO REVERSE EXTINCTIONS (ESPN Films), Dr. Michael Archer talks of his seminal work in extracting ancient DNA from animal species we have extinguished, to bring them back to life and release into the world. Citing that our DNA is just data that can be recorded and accessed, he postulates that the future of mankind won’t be people traveling expensively and slowly through space, but rather we will traverse the universe as a stream of data carrying our genome as a digital recipe to be cooked up on the receiving end, using the same chemicals we’re made of (which are readily available throughout the cosmos).
As we create more and more digital data about us and our world to store, a Harvard University team has announced a breakthrough—the encoding and storing of actual motion picture data in a bacterium’s DNA, then extracting, reconstructing and playing it back on the other end. There are multiple benefits to using bacterial DNA as mass data storage, including permanency, weight and size (215,000 terabytes can fit in just one gram of DNA).
Dr. Archer’s notion that we could store our genome as needed and be able to beam it as our “recipe” to anywhere in the universe could indeed be the final frontier for Mankind. Storing it in a way that is impervious to EMF pulses and other physical threats is a critical first step. And this new advancement might just be it.

HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY FACE/OFF!
Twenty years ago we celebrated FACE/OFF’s North American opening to public and critical acclaim. Predicting the medical future of today (actual face replacements and 3D printing of body parts and more - now a reality), it truly stands the test of time as a vision of the future that has finally arrived - and as a deep, emotional, edge-of-your seat actioner. Watch it, a fun time guaranteed for all!
Congratulations to my lifelong friends made during the movie:
Barrie M. Osborne, Zareh Nalbandian and Boyd Shermis.
